Shrewsbury School

bedroom

Location

Our new location is Shrewsbury School, Shrewsbury.
See 2009 Summer School page for map.

Accommodation

Resident/non-resident

We provide accommodation in Shrewsbury School boarding houses as follows:
– Single study-bedrooms, some with twin beds
– Shared single-sex bathrooms and shower-rooms
– TV lounge on each floor
– Bed linen, duvet and pillow supplied
– Bring your own towels
– Electric kettles on each floor
– No laundry facilities or irons

The accommodation is designed for a boys’ boarding school and is basic and variable. For those who require a higher standard, there is plenty of bed-and-breakfast accommodation in Shrewsbury. Several of last year’s students took up this option, with great success, and we recommend you do the same (see ‘Non-residents’ below). Bed-and-breakfast lists will be sent out with our acceptance letters if requested. We regret that we are unable to make bookings on your behalf.

If you have a proven medical need, we may be able to provide an en-suite bedroom (doctor’s letter required). As there are few lifts, it is also important that you let us know of any mobility issues. Please indicate your need on the Application Form.

Improvement building work is being carried out at Shrewsbury School between now and August 2009, and it may be that at a later stage we are able to offer an accommodation upgrade. If this is the case, you will be given this option and there will be an appropriate top-up fee.

Non-residents

– Non-resident students are most welcome
– Attendance on-site from 8.45 am
– Lunchtime and evening concerts are included in the fee
– Lunch, dinner, tea and coffee is provided (not breakfast)

The servery

Typical working day

Most teaching and practice will take place in the Maidment Building, a few minutes walk away from the accommodation blocks and the refectory (where tea, coffee and meals are served). There are several other teaching, practice and recital venues on site. The bar is open to fit in with the Summer School timetable. Disabled access throughout the School is excellent.

07.30 The main music block is opened so you can start practising.
  08.00 Breakfast in the refectory.
08.50 Vocal warm-up session – open to everyone.
  09.15 Courses – Session 1
Pianists and Solo Singers may have a group session on technique, repertoire, etc. or may have a one-to-one tutorial, usually in masterclass format. Those not ‘performing’ may observe their own or any other course, or use the time for practising. Choral students will work as a single group or be divided to study with different tutors or possibly with the student conductors.
10.45 Coffee break in the refectory.
11.15 Courses – Session 2 following a similar pattern to the previous session.
  12.30 Lunch in the refectory.
13.30 Student recitals or free/practice time.
  14.30 Courses – Session 3
16.00 Tea break in the refectory.
  16.15 Courses – Session 4
You can expect to be ‘free’ for one of sessions 2, 3 or 4, allowing you to observe a different course, do some extra private practice, or simply take a break.
17.30 Summer School Chorus rehearsal in the Maidment Building. This is our chance to make music all together.
18.30 Formal teaching finishes for the day. The bar is open for pre-dinner
drinks and relaxation.
19.00 Dinner in the refectory. Wine is provided free on the first night.

20.15 Public recital or other entertainment.
21.30 The formal entertainment is usually over and the bar re-opens. There may be an informal concert.
23.30 The main building is locked.

Facilities

The Summer School shop, operated by members of the committee, stocks bottled water and basic medications, postcards, stamps etc. Wine for your evening meal will also be available. Local shops are a short walk away.

Choral Course music will be available to borrow during the Summer School week, and can be bought in advance from Salop Music. Details will be sent out with confirmation of booking. Salop Music will also be running a music shop during Summer School lunchtimes from Monday to Friday, selling a broad range of music including Summer School repertoire.

Shrewsbury School swimming pool will be open from Monday to Friday, 6.30 - 8.30 am, with a lifeguard on duty.

Travel information

We send out basic travel guidance with the student information pack but regret that we cannot help students to make their travel arrangements. Shrewsbury is a thriving market town in the heart of Shropshire, in the West Midlands. Getting to and from the town from the international airports is often time-consuming. We may be able to book your room for an extra night (Friday 8 August, for example) if you give sufficient notice. Shrewsbury School is about a mile away from the centre of Shrewsbury and the railway station, from which there is a regular train service.

Arrival and departure

Students of the Summer School come into residence from 3pm on Saturday 8 August and leave again after breakfast on Saturday 15 August. Non-resident students attend from 4 pm on the 8th to the night of the 14th.

Special requirements

Please let us know in advance, if you have any special dietary or access requirements. We will do our best to accommodate your needs.

Under-18s

Under-18s will have the benefit of two House-parents, in addition to their tutors. The fee for Under-18s reflects this.

Observers

Observers, such as parents accompanying young musicians, are very welcome on the understanding that they will not take an active part in courses, receive personal tuition, or use the practice facilities. Observers are, however, welcome to take part in the daily Summer School Chorus sessions.

Visitors

Visitors are welcome as observers on a daily basis or for part of the week, as residents or non-residents (lunch and dinner included), subject to prior arrangement with the Administrator.

Management

ISSMUS is a registered charity, managed by a committee of volunteers who are also trustees of the organisation. We are available throughout the Summer School week to help newcomers to find their feet (their teaching room, practice facilities, the bar, etc.) and to receive your suggestions for improvements. We have an Administrator who works part-time throughout the year, dealing with applications, correspondence and enquiries.
